New Windows - Are They Worth it?
We have an older home and the windows were quite old as well. Several of them would not even open and they definitely let cold air in during the winter. After being in our home for 9 years, we decided we had to make the spend and get new windows.
Was it worth it - probably, but it is too early to say for certain. Once winter arrives, I think we will notice the upgrade in a big way. Also, in our case, we are planning on staying in our home for several more years, so this is not an investment we are trying to recoup immediately.
Overall. I would have to say the short answer to if new windows are worth it, is yes, new windows can be worth it for daily comfort and property appeal, but they are a long term investment.
If your windows are older and inefficient, you may want to consider replacing them to help lower your energy bills and make your living space more comfortable. That being said, the financial payback period is incredibly long—often taking 10 to 30 years to break even on the upfront installation costs. However, if your current windows are physically failing, drafty, or letting in massive amounts of street noise, the immediate upgrade to your quality of life is substantial.
The Real Cost vs. Return
Understanding the financial reality helps keep your expectations realistic:
- Upfront Cost: Expect to pay between $300 and $2,500 per window including labor, depending heavily on whether you choose budget-friendly vinyl or premium wood frames. There are large variety of window types to choose from.
- Resale Return (ROI): You will generally recoup 60% to 70% of the project cost in added home value when you sell. While it will not completely pay for itself, it makes a house much easier to sell. However, keep in mind that return is not immediate. If you replace the windows and then turn around and sell the home you will not recoup as much money as if you sell the home in 5-8 years.
- Energy Savings: Upgrading from drafty, single-pane glass to Energy Star certified models typically trims 10% to 15% off your monthly heating and cooling bills. That savings will add up in the long run as well.
